Which innovations reduce Europe’s dependency on unstable and contested imports of coconut oil, palm kernel oils, fatty acids and castor oil? In the COSMOS-project, Researchers of Wageningen University and Research have looked for adequate substitutes from the crops Camelina and Crambe. New plant breeding techniques, such as CRISPR, enhanced the characteristics of these crops regarding the flavor and the molecular structure of their oils. After extracting the oils from these crops one can further valorise the side streams for use as feed for for example the Black Soldier Fly larvae. The building industry is still amongst the most polluting sectors of the planet, even though there are plenty of alternative biobased building materials. To facilitate the building industry, Wageningen University and Research created the Catalogue Biobased Building materials,<\/em> presenting a systematic overview of the wide variety of biobased building materials, many of which have been researched at Wageningen. A demonstration project, focused on wood, fibers and flax insulation, shows the potential of sustainable, circular biobased materials. The huge expertise on plants and food value chains of Wageningen University and Research together with many partners, is being used to realize more sustainable textiles value chains. 80 billion pieces of clothing are sold woldwide, each year. The textile industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. At the opening of the 2018 Academic year of the university, chair Louise O. Fresco showcased real circular fashion innovations, such as: a watch strap made out of mycelium; a dress from deadstock silk, designed to minimize textile waste in production; the use of residual ink, a conventional waste product; and a scarf made of vegan silk, dyed with bacteria. Bioplastics restoring ecosystems<\/strong><\/p>

The original idea to recover value out of side streams from the fries production has resulted in the innovative potato starch based bioplastics. Rodenburg Biopolymers and Wageningen University and Research together enhanced the properties of the bioplastics (e.g., brittleness and deterioration time) to match end-product requirements. Biodegradable Elements for Starting Ecosystems (BESE) exploits its characteristic of full biodegradability in a natural environment, making it a great environmental friendly material to restore degraded coastal ecosystems. The bioplastics temporarily facilitate habitat modifiers, enabling ecosystem development. BEWiSynbra approached Wageningen University and Research to jointly create a biobased alternative for fossil-based polystyrene insulation foam (EPS). Crops with a high sugar content (e.g. sugar cane, and sugar beet) proved to suit the required EPS-characteristics best. The derived biobased polylactic acid (PLA) became the basis of the product BioFoam. There are quite some steps that have to be undertaken to create Biofoam out of biomass, which can then be used for e.g. insulation, horticultural substrates, and organ transportation. Biofoam can be completely biodegraded, composted, re-formed, or recycled. Biofoam is the first foam that received the Cradle2Cradle (C2CCM) certification in 2009. Tomato fibers enriched paper<\/strong><\/p>

Greenhouse crops create systematic waste streams due to: removal of leaves for the better development of the fruit or vegetable, wasted crops after harvesting, and biomass resulting from seasonally clearing greenhouses. Wageningen University and Research has been working together with Schut Paper on upcycling such greenhouse residuals into fiber enriched paper and cardboard. The subtle presence of added fibers raises the visual value of their paper and cardboard brand Valorise. Residual biomass can replace cellulose from wood up till one-sixth of the paper and cardboard.
